In short
A brush that will not spin is nearly always jammed with hair, thread or a trapped object. Switch the robot off, remove the main brush and side brush, cut hair away, pull fibres from the brush ends and the bearings, and check the drive socket for debris. Refit and test. If the brush still does not turn, or the app shows a brush motor error after cleaning, the motor or gearbox may need support.

When a robot vacuum's main brush or side brush stops spinning, the robot usually shows an error such as brush roll stuck, or keeps cleaning but leaves dirt behind. Shark owners often see a brush roll error, while Roborock, Eufy and Ecovacs robots show a main brush or side brush message in the app. The cause is almost always hair or debris, and the fix takes a few minutes. Here is how to clear it and how to tell when a part needs replacing.
Why brushes jam
Long hair, pet fur, carpet fibres and thread wrap around the brush and work their way into the end caps and bearings. Over time they pack tight enough to stop the brush. Robots also pick up small objects, such as hair ties, cable ties and pieces of toys, that wedge between the brush and the housing.
Anti-tangle brushes, such as Shark's self-cleaning brush roll, Roborock's dual rubber brushes or Dreame's DuoBrush, reduce wrapping but do not end it. Hair still collects at the ends. Our pet hair guide covers designs that cope best.
Clearing the main brush
- 1
Switch the robot off and turn it over onto a towel.
- 2
Release the brush guard using the clips or tabs shown in your manual.
- 3
Lift the main brush out, end with the square drive peg last.
- 4
Cut through wrapped hair along the brush with scissors or the supplied tool, avoiding the bristles or rubber fins.
- 5
Pull off the end caps if they are removable and clear hair from the axles.
- 6
Wipe the brush chamber and check the drive socket for hair or grit.
- 7
Refit the brush, close the guard and test.
Note:Always switch the robot off before handling brushes. Keep fingers away from the drive socket if the robot is on.
Fixing a side brush that will not spin
The side brush sweeps dirt from edges into the main brush. It is usually held by a single screw or pushes onto a peg. Remove it, pull away hair wound around the shaft beneath it, and check the bristles. Bent or splayed bristles flick dirt away rather than sweeping it in, so replace the side brush if it looks worn.
Some robots, such as Ecovacs TruEdge and Dreame models with extending brushes, push the side brush outwards on an arm. If the arm sticks, clear debris around its base and check for hair in the hinge. Never force it.
Worn parts and motor faults
Use this table to decide whether to clean, replace or call support.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Error clears after cleaning | Hair or debris jam | Clean weekly |
| Brush turns stiffly by hand | Hair in bearings or end caps | Clear or replace end caps |
| Bristles or fins torn | Wear or damage | Replace the brush |
| Clicking or grinding | Damaged drive peg or gearbox | Stop and contact support |
| Error returns at once | Brush motor fault | Contact support |
| Side brush wobbles | Loose screw or worn peg | Tighten or replace |
Brushes on combo robots and docks
On all-in-one robots, a jammed brush can also come from the dock. Some docks wash the brush area or the mop next to it, and hair from the washing tray can end up back on the brush. When you clear a jam, also clean the dock's washing tray and its filter so the same hair is not picked up again.
Robots that lift their brush or mop for carpets or spills, such as the Ecovacs T80S Omni with its lift system, have extra moving parts around the brush housing. If a lift error appears with a brush error, clear debris around the lift mechanism and check the manual before forcing anything. Our Deebot troubleshooting guide and Roborock troubleshooting guide cover brand-specific checks.
Preventing it happening again
Check the brush every week if you have pets or long-haired people at home, and every two weeks otherwise. Pick up hair ties, string and phone cables before a run, or use no-go zones over cable areas. Our page on stopping a robot getting stuck has more ideas.
Replace the main brush and side brush roughly as the maker suggests, usually every few months for side brushes and less often for main brushes. A worn brush also reduces suction; see robot vacuum losing suction.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Shark robot say brush roll stuck? Usually hair or debris jamming the brush roll or its end. Clear it as above and restart. See our Shark error codes.
Can I run the robot without the side brush? It will still vacuum, but edges and corners will be missed. Fit a replacement as soon as you can.
Are compatible brushes safe? Usually, if made for your exact model. Poor fits can rub or stress the motor.
How do I remove hair from a robot vacuum brush quickly? Cut along the groove many brushes have for this purpose, then pull the hair off in one go.
