Vacuum & mop

Vacuum and mop robots range from a damp pad dragged behind the robot to twin rotating mops or a roller mop washed in the dock. The mop type and how far the mops lift on carpet matter most.

Mop types
Pad, rotating, roller
Mop lift
Often 5 to 20 mm

A vibrating pad wipes the floor as the robot moves; twin rotating mops press down and scrub; a roller mop is washed continuously in the robot or the dock. Rotating and roller mops usually deal better with dried marks.

Check the mop lift in mm: a robot that lifts its mops when it detects carpet can clean rugs and hard floors in one run. Some robots leave the mops in the dock instead.

All-in-one docks wash the mops, dry them with warm air, refill the clean-water tank and collect the dirty water. They are larger, so measure the space before you buy.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a vibrating pad to remove dried-on spills.
  • Running a robot with mops that do not lift across long-pile rugs.
