Mop-washing docks are what turned robot mops from a damp cloth into something that genuinely cleans hard floors. They go by many names: Omni stations at Ecovacs and Eufy, Ultra docks at Dreame and Roborock, AutoWash at iRobot and NeverTouch at Shark. They all do broadly the same jobs, with differences in water temperature, drying and how much of the routine they automate. This page explains each job and what to look for.

What happens when the robot docks

When a mopping run ends, or partway through a large room, the robot drives onto a ramp so its mop sits over a washing tray. The dock pumps clean water from its tank into the tray, and the robot spins or rolls the mop against ribs or scrapers to scrub it. A pump then sucks the dirty water into the dirty-water tank.

Many docks repeat this several times during a run, so the mop does not spread kitchen grime into the hallway. Roller mops, such as the Ecovacs T80S Omni's, also rinse themselves continuously while they clean, so they need fewer return trips.

Hot water washing

Some docks heat the wash water. Warm water dissolves grease and dried food better than cold, so the mop comes out cleaner. The Dreame L40s Ultra lists rinsing at 167°F (75°C), the Ecovacs T80S Omni lists warm water washing, and the Roomba Max 705 Combo dock lists heated mopping and roller washing. Shark's ThermaCharged models also heat the wash.

You still fill the clean tank with cold tap water unless the manual says otherwise; the dock does the heating. Hot washing uses more electricity per cycle than a cold rinse, which is worth knowing if you mop daily.

Hot-air drying

A damp mop left in a closed dock can start to smell within a day or two. Warm-air drying blows heated air over the mop after the final wash. The Eufy X10 Pro Omni lists 45°C drying and the Ecovacs T80S Omni lists 140°F (60°C). Higher temperatures dry faster, but any heated drying is a big improvement on none.

Drying typically runs for a few hours after a mopping run, quietly in the background. Most apps let you shorten it or pick a quieter mode.

The other jobs a dock can do

Most mop docks also handle several other tasks. The table lists the common ones and what they save you.

What you still have to do

Empty the dirty-water tank after each mopping run or every couple of days, rinse it, and refill the clean tank. Clean the washing tray and its filter weekly, as hair and grit collect there. Change the dust bag when the app asks. See how to empty a robot vacuum.

Use only the maker's detergent, at the stated dose. Other products can foam, block the pumps or void the warranty. Our page on robot mop cleaning solution explains why. Some docks can be plumbed into a water supply and drain, but that usually needs a separate kit and, depending on your home, a plumber.

Note:Docks combine water and mains electricity. Keep them on a level floor, wipe up spills, and unplug before cleaning inside the dock.

Is a washing dock worth the space?

Washing docks are large, often around 40 to 50 cm tall and deep, and need space in front for the robot to drive in. Check the height under shelves or worktops before buying. In return, they make daily mopping practical, which is the main reason to buy a mopping robot at all.

If you have little hard floor, a simpler dock may suit you better; see robot vacuum with or without a mop. If you mop large tiled areas, compare designs in our roller against rotating mop comparison.
