Self-emptying
A self-emptying dock sucks the robot's bin into a bag or a bagless container each time it docks. Compare the bag size in litres, how often the maker says to change it and the size of the dock itself.
- Typical dock bag
- 2.5 to 4 L
- Stated bag life
- Up to about 60 days

The dock bag is usually 2.5 to 4 litres; makers quote a number of days between changes, which depends on your floors, pets and how often the robot runs. Bagless docks save on bags but need emptying more often and release some dust when you do.
Check the dock size in cm, especially the height and depth, and leave the clearance the manual asks for at the sides and front. Emptying is loud for a few seconds, so many robots let you set quiet hours.
Bags, filters and side brushes are the running costs. See bags and spares for what to keep in.
Common mistakes
- Buying a dock that is too tall for the space under a worktop or radiator shelf.
- Using cheap bags that do not seal, so the dock loses suction.
