In short
Most self-emptying failures come from a full or badly fitted bag, a full bagless bin, a lid not fully closed, or hair blocking the port on the robot's bin or the duct in the base. Check those first, then make sure the robot sits squarely on the dock and that auto-empty is switched on in the app. If the base makes no sound at all, check the power and contact the maker.

A self-emptying dock is one of the best features on a robot vacuum, so it is frustrating when the robot comes home full and the base stays silent or runs without pulling anything out. Whether you have a bagged dock from Roborock, Dreame, Eufy or iRobot, or a bagless base from Shark or Ecovacs, the causes are similar. This guide goes through them in a sensible order, from the quick checks to signs of a fault.
Check the bag or bin
A full bag is the first thing to check. Bags fill with fine dust that you cannot always see, and once full the base cannot pull more air through. Replace the bag and make sure the collar slides fully into its guides. Many docks will not run if the bag is missing or not seated. Our guide to robot vacuum dock bags covers fit.
On a bagless base, such as Shark's, empty the bin when it reaches the max line and rinse or tap out the filter as the manual says. A clogged base filter has the same effect as a full bag. Close every lid firmly; an open or loose lid lets air leak and stops the suction building.
Clear the evacuation port and duct
- 1
Switch off and unplug the dock.
- 2
Remove the robot's bin and look at the flap or port the dock empties through.
- 3
Pull out hair, fluff or debris jamming the flap so it opens and closes freely.
- 4
Look into the matching opening on the dock base where the robot sits.
- 5
Remove the bag or bin and look down the duct from the top for blockages.
- 6
Clear any clog carefully with your fingers or a blunt, flexible tool; do not use anything sharp.
- 7
Refit everything, plug in and test.
Note:Unplug the dock before reaching into the duct or base.
Docking position and contacts
The robot must sit squarely on the base for the port to line up. If the base is on carpet, against a skirting board that tilts it, or has a ramp covered in dust, the robot may charge but fail to seal against the emptying port. Move the base to a hard, level floor with clear space around it.
Wipe the charging contacts on the robot and base with a dry cloth. If the robot is not docking reliably at all, our won't dock guide covers placement and sensors.
App settings and cycles
Most apps let you choose when the base empties: after every clean, after a set number of cleans, or never. Do Not Disturb hours can also suspend emptying at night. Check these settings, then trigger a manual empty from the app if that option exists.
Some robots skip emptying after a short spot clean or when the robot returns with very little in the bin. On all-in-one docks, the base may wash the mop first and empty later, so wait for the cycle to finish.
| Check | Fix |
|---|---|
| Bag full or missing | Fit a new bag correctly |
| Bagless bin full | Empty and clean the filter |
| Lid not closed | Close until it clicks |
| Port flap blocked | Clear hair from the flap |
| Duct clogged | Clear from top and bottom |
| Robot misaligned | Level floor, clean ramp |
| Auto-empty off | Turn on in the app |
When it is a fault
If the base makes no sound at all, check the plug, socket and any power switch on the base. If it runs but sounds weak or rattles, the fan or motor may be failing. If it trips the socket or smells of burning, unplug it straight away and stop using it.
Contact the maker's support with the model number and what you have checked. Docks usually share a warranty with the robot. If you need an alternative while waiting, empty the robot's bin by hand; see how to empty a robot vacuum.
Note:Stop using any dock that smells of burning, sparks or trips the electrics, and get it checked.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Shark robot vacuum not emptying? Usually a full bin, a clogged base filter or hair at the bin's emptying port. Clear them and check the robot sits flat on the base.
Why does my Ecovacs station not empty the robot? Check the bag or bagless bin, the lid and the port, then check the auto-empty setting in the Ecovacs Home app. See Deebot troubleshooting.
Is it normal for the base to be very loud? Yes, for a few seconds. A change in sound or a longer run can mean a blockage.
Can I use the robot without emptying? Yes, empty the onboard bin by hand after each run until the dock works.
