In short
Shark's robots use bagless self-empty bases and a self-cleaning brush roll, so there are no dust bags to buy. Dreame's robots empty into bags but usually go further on mopping, with hot water mop washing, extending mops and higher quoted suction. Choose Shark if you want no bags and simple upkeep on carpet, and Dreame if hard-floor mopping and corner reach matter more.

Our verdict
Pick a Shark, such as the Matrix Plus or NeverTouch Pro, if you want a bagless base and a hair-resistant brush roll for carpeted rooms. Pick the Dreame L40s Ultra if you want hot water mop washing and edge reach on hard floors, or the D20 Plus for low-maintenance self-emptying on a tighter budget.
Shark is a familiar name from cordless and upright hoovers, and Dreame has grown quickly as a robot specialist. On Amazon UK their robots often sit at similar levels, yet they solve the same problems in different ways. Shark builds around bagless bases and its self-cleaning brush roll. Dreame builds around big docks that wash and dry the mop and empty into a bag. Here we compare the Dreame L40s Ultra and D20 Plus with the Shark PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro and Matrix Plus, using the listings for every figure.
Bagless Shark bases against Dreame dust bags
Both Shark models here have bagless bases. The Matrix Plus base holds up to 60 days of debris and the PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro bin also lists 60 days. When the bin is full, you lift it out and tip it into a bin bag. Shark's Matrix Plus listing also mentions True HEPA filtration and an anti-allergen seal in the base.
Dreame uses bags. The D20 Plus empties into a 5 litre bag that the listing says lasts up to 150 days, and the L40s Ultra says up to 100 days without emptying. A bag keeps dust sealed when you change it, but it is a spare to keep buying. Our bagged against bagless comparison covers the trade-offs in detail.
Mopping: sonic pad, washing dock or full Ultra station
The Shark Matrix Plus has a sonic mop that the listing says scrubs 100 times a minute, using reusable microfibre pads. Its base empties dust but does not wash the pad. The PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro is Shark's step up: the base refills the water tank for up to 30 days and washes and dries the mop pad after every clean, and the pad extends up to an inch for edges while staying lifted above carpets.
The Dreame L40s Ultra rinses its twin rotating pads with hot water at 167°F (75°C), dries them, refills water and solution, and extends the mop for edges. It offers several carpet strategies in the app, including removing the mops before carpet, lifting them for low-pile rugs and avoiding carpets altogether. The D20 Plus has a simpler mop with 32 water levels and no washing dock. Read more in our explainer on self-cleaning mop docks.
Hair, brushes and climbing
Shark's self-cleaning brush roll is designed to stop hair wrapping and appears on both Shark models here. Dreame's L40s Ultra uses a HyperStream detangling DuoBrush with one bristled rubber brush and one TPU rubber brush, and the D20 Plus has an anti-tangle DuoBrush. Long hair can still gather at the brush ends on any robot, so check them every week or two.
For thresholds, the L40s Ultra lists EasyLeap climbing wheels that cross steps up to 1.57 inches (about 4 cm). The NeverTouch Pro has NeverStuck technology that lifts the robot over obstacles and thresholds. If your home has raised door bars, read our threshold guide.

Which suits which home
Shark suits mostly carpeted homes, people who would rather not buy bags, and anyone who already likes Shark's brush roll on their upright. The Matrix Clean grid takes multiple passes, which helps on carpet. Shark does not publish Pa figures in these listings, so compare it on features rather than numbers.
Dreame suits homes with large hard floors, where a washing dock with hot water and an extending mop makes a real difference to everyday mopping. It also suits bigger homes thanks to longer runtimes. For a wider look at mopping robots, see our guide to the best robot vacuum and mop combos.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shark make a robot with a mop-washing dock? Yes. The PowerDetect NeverTouch Pro base washes and dries the mop pad after every clean and refills the robot's water tank.
Why does Shark not list Pa suction? Shark tends to describe suction in comparison with other models rather than in pascals. That makes a direct number-to-number comparison with Dreame impossible, so focus on brush design and real features.
Is a bagless base messier to empty? It can release a little dust when you tip it out. Emptying it straight into an outdoor bin or a bin bag keeps it tidy.
Which is quieter? Neither listing gives a clear noise figure for every model. Both brands offer quieter suction modes and Do Not Disturb hours in their apps, and every self-emptying base is loud for a few seconds.
