The Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo is for small flats and tight homes where there is simply no room for a self-emptying tower. Instead of handing dirt to a base, it crushes debris mechanically inside the robot, and iRobot says you will not need to empty it for up to 60 days. No dock, no bags and a small footprint: that is the whole idea, and it is what sets it apart from every docked model on this site.

In its favour
- Onboard DustCompactor removes the need for a separate self-emptying station, and needs no emptying for up to 60 days.
- Bagless design, so there are no bags to buy or store in a small flat.
- ClearView lidar maps in neat rows even in the dark, and automatic carpet detection stops it mopping rugs.
Good to know
- The listing does not state runtime or a suction figure in Pa (only 70x a Roomba 600).
- Mopping is a simple pad with a micro-pump; there is no mop washing or drying.
Our take
How the DustCompactor works
iRobot calls this an industry first. The robot continuously compacts what it collects using a mechanical process, storing it in a bagless container on board. The result is bin emptying every couple of months, without the noise and floor space of a separate station.
For a household that cleans daily, that means far fewer trips to the kitchen bin than with a standard robot.
Cleaning hardware
The 4-Stage Cleaning system includes what iRobot describes as 70 times more suction than a Roomba 600, a multi-surface rubber brush, an edge-sweeping brush and a microfibre mop pad. The spec table lists 7,000 Pa and four power levels. Recommended surfaces are wood, laminate and tile, with pet hair pickup named. Automatic carpet detection stops it mopping rugs, and you can choose vac only, mop only or both together.
Mopping and app control
A micro-pump keeps the pad evenly moist and lets you adjust how much solution is pumped. SmartScrub doubles scrubbing depth on coffee spills, according to iRobot. The pad is not washed automatically, so rinse it by hand after mopping sessions. ClearView LiDAR maps the home and cleans in neat rows even in the dark. The app offers keep-out zones, time estimates and filter-life checks, and voice assistants and on-robot buttons also work. Runtime is not stated.
Against other small-home picks
The Roomba 505 Combo adds an AutoWash dock and pet waste avoidance, at the cost of floor space. The Xiaomi H40 uses a compact 32.6 cm self-empty base. The 205 is the only one here that needs no base for emptying at all.
Verdict
The Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo suits studio flats, small apartments and anyone short on floor space who mostly has hard floors and some light mopping to do. If you want the mop pad washed for you, the Roomba 505 Combo has a dock that does it. If you accept a slim base, the Xiaomi H40 offers bagged self-emptying.
