  • Best overall

iRobot Roomba 205 DustCompactor: no emptying station needed

Onboard DustCompactor removes the need for a separate self-emptying station, and needs no emptying for up to 60 days.

  • Best value

    Xiaomi H40: compact 32.6 cm self-empty base

Compact 32.6 cm base is 59% smaller than the previous generation, according to Xiaomi.

  • Most features

Lefant M3: compact all-in-one dock that washes the mop

Compact base tucks under cabinets, and still empties into a 3.2 L bag for up to 90 days.

In a small flat, the robot itself is rarely the problem. It is the dock. Full-size mopping stations hold clean and dirty water tanks, so they are bulky and need clear space either side, which is hard to find in a one-bed with a narrow hallway. The good news is that a flat rarely needs a huge battery either: almost any modern robot covers a few rooms on one charge, so you can put the focus on a compact base, sensible suction and lidar mapping that copes with tight doorways. This guide compares seven models for flats, from a Roomba that compacts dust inside the robot with no self-emptying station at all, through compact self-empty bases, to a small all-in-one dock that washes the mop. Each is compared on dock, runtime, suction, mopping and navigation, using the details in its Amazon listing.

The products in detail

No. 1 · iRobot

iRobot Roomba 205 DustCompactor: no emptying station needed

The space-saver of the group: the 205 crushes debris inside the robot so there is no separate self-emptying station, yet iRobot says it still goes up to 60 days without emptying.

In its favour

  • Onboard DustCompactor removes the need for a separate self-emptying station, and needs no emptying for up to 60 days.
  • Bagless design, so there are no bags to buy or store in a small flat.
  • ClearView lidar maps in neat rows even in the dark, and automatic carpet detection stops it mopping rugs.

Good to know

  • The listing does not state runtime or a suction figure in Pa (only 70x a Roomba 600).
  • Mopping is a simple pad with a micro-pump; there is no mop washing or drying.

No. 2 · Xiaomi

Xiaomi H40: compact 32.6 cm self-empty base

Xiaomi shrank the base to a compact 32.6 cm, which it says is 59% smaller than the previous generation, while the 4 L bag lasts up to 90 days. A tidy fit for a hallway or under a desk.

In its favour

  • Compact 32.6 cm base is 59% smaller than the previous generation, according to Xiaomi.
  • 4 L bag lasts up to 90 days, so emptying is rare.
  • 10,000 Pa suction and a five-step anti-tangle system aimed at long-haired pets.

Good to know

  • Runtime of 100 minutes is the shortest listed here, though enough for many flats.
  • Mopping is a basic pad and tank; the base does not wash or dry it.

No. 3 · Tapo

Tapo RV30 Max Plus: 150 minutes and 3-year warranty

  • Climbs up to 22 mm, enough for most door bars between rooms.
  • Listing states a 3 year manufacturer warranty and a UK support line.

Good to know

  • The listing does not give the base station's dimensions, so check the space it needs.

No. 4 · Lefant

Lefant M3: compact all-in-one dock that washes the mop

The M3 brings mop washing and drying to a base that Lefant says tucks neatly under cabinets. With 12,000 Pa and up to 220 minutes, it is the most capable mopper for a small kitchen.

In its favour

  • Compact base tucks under cabinets, and still empties into a 3.2 L bag for up to 90 days.
  • Washes mops with 45°C water and dries them with cool air, according to Lefant.
  • Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, useful in flats with crowded networks.

Good to know

  • The listing does not give the base station's height or width in cm, so measure your cabinet gap carefully.
  • A washing dock needs water tanks refilled and emptied by hand.

No. 5 · Lefant

Lefant M2 Pro: bagless 90-day self-emptying

Lefant's M2 Pro holds 90 days of debris in a bagless base, so there are no bags to store. dToF lidar maps in the dark and PSD sensors spot objects as close as 4 cm.

In its favour

  • Bagless base holds 90 days of debris, and can switch to bagged mode if you prefer.
  • Boosts suction on carpet automatically when the mop is removed.
  • dToF lidar works in darkness, and PSD sensors detect objects as close as 4 cm.

Good to know

  • When mopping it avoids carpets completely, so rugs need a separate vacuum run.
  • The listing does not give base station dimensions.

No. 6 · iRobot

iRobot Roomba 505 Combo: AutoWash dock, pet waste avoidance

A full washing dock from iRobot with mop pads that auto-lift on carpet and PrecisionVision AI that avoids cords, socks and pet waste. Worth the space if your flat has hard floors and a pet.

In its favour

  • AutoWash Dock gives 75 days of emptying, pad washing and heated pad drying.
  • Mop pads auto-lift when carpet is sensed, so rugs in a living room stay dry.
  • PrecisionVision AI recognises cords, socks and pet waste and steers around them.

Good to know

  • A washing and drying dock is bulkier than the compact self-empty bases here, and the listing gives no dock size.
  • No suction figure in Pa is given, only a comparison with older Roombas.
