Lidar vs camera navigation in robot vacuums

In short
Lidar uses a spinning laser to measure distances, so it maps accurately and works in the dark, but on its own it is poor at spotting small objects like socks and cables. Cameras recognise objects but need some light or an infrared helper. Many current robots combine lidar for mapping with a camera or structured light for obstacles; if you would rather have no camera, choose lidar with structured light.

Our verdict
Choose a lidar-only robot such as the Roborock Q7 BF for tidy floors on a budget, or the lidar and structured light Roborock Qrevo 5AE if you want better obstacle sensing without a camera. Choose a camera model such as the Eufy Omni S1 Pro for cluttered homes, and set its privacy options before the first run.
Almost every robot vacuum worth buying now maps your home rather than bouncing off walls. The question is how. Lidar robots measure the room with a laser, camera robots look at it, and many premium models use both. The choice affects how well the robot avoids clutter, whether it works with the lights off and what data the robot collects. Here is how the systems differ, which models use which, and what to check in the app if you buy one with a camera.
How lidar navigation works
Lidar (light detection and ranging) is usually the round turret on top of the robot. A laser spins inside it and measures the distance to walls and furniture many times a second. From those measurements the robot builds a floor plan, works out where it is and cleans in tidy rows.
Because lidar brings its own light, it works the same in a dark room as a bright one. Maps tend to be accurate and quick to build. The downsides: the turret adds height, which can stop the robot fitting under low sofas, and the laser scans at turret level, so it does not see a cable or a sock lying flat on the floor. Many lidar robots add a front bumper and simple sensors for that.
Budget models such as the Roborock Q7 BF use lidar for mapping without a camera. That suits tidy floors where you pick things up before a run.
How camera navigation and object recognition work
A camera robot uses one or more front-facing cameras. Some older or cheaper designs navigate by camera alone, matching features on walls and ceilings, which needs reasonable light. More commonly today, the camera's job is object recognition: software identifies things like shoes, cables, socks and pet mess and steers around them.
The Eufy Omni S1 Pro is an example: its listing describes 3D MatrixEye, which pairs binocular infrared imaging with an RGB camera to build real-time 3D models of objects. The Eufy X10 Pro Omni listing says it can identify over 100 object types, even at night. Infrared lighting is how many camera robots cope in low light.
A middle option is structured light, which projects a pattern of light and reads its shape to judge obstacles without taking ordinary pictures. The Roborock Qrevo 5AE listing pairs lidar with structured light sensors for cables, toys and chair legs.
Lidar vs camera compared
If floors are often cluttered with toys, charging cables or pet accidents, object recognition is worth paying for. Our best robot vacuum with obstacle avoidance guide compares models on exactly that.
| Factor | Lidar only | Lidar plus structured light | Lidar or 3D plus camera |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mapping accuracy | High | High | High |
| Works in the dark | Yes | Yes | Yes on most, with infrared |
| Small floor clutter | Weak | Better | Best at telling objects apart |
| Takes images | No | No ordinary photos | Yes |

Privacy settings to check on a camera robot
A robot with a camera moves around your home, and some apps can show photos of obstacles or even a live view. Menus vary by brand and model, so treat this as a checklist and look in the maker's app and privacy policy for the exact settings.
- 1
Find out whether obstacle photos are uploaded or stay on the robot, and turn off photo uploads if the app allows it.
- 2
Check whether the robot has a remote live view or video call feature, and disable it if you do not use it. Some apps protect it with a separate PIN or password.
- 3
Turn off any option to share images to help train the maker's recognition software, if offered.
- 4
Use a strong, unique password and two-factor sign-in for the app account where available.
- 5
Keep the robot's firmware and the app updated.
- 6
Review who has shared access to the robot in the app, and delete saved maps and images before selling or passing the robot on.
Note:If you want no camera at all, check the spec sheet rather than the marketing name. Phrases such as 'AI' or 'vision' can mean a camera, while 'structured light' or '3D ToF' usually do not.
Roborock without a camera, and other choices
Roborock sells models both with and without cameras. Going by their listings, the Q7 BF uses lidar alone and the Qrevo 5AE pairs lidar with structured light sensors rather than describing a camera. Other Roborock models do use cameras for object recognition, so check the spec of the exact model. Our Roborock models compared guide sets out the range.
Height is a related trade-off. A lidar turret adds a few centimetres, and some slim models move or retract the sensor. Before buying, compare the robot's full height with the gap under your sofa using the clearance check. To understand how the map itself is built, see how robot vacuums map your home.
Frequently asked questions
Is lidar or camera better for a robot vacuum? Lidar is better for accurate maps and dark rooms; a camera is better at recognising small objects. The best robots combine lidar mapping with camera or structured light obstacle sensing.
Do lidar robot vacuums work in the dark? Yes. The laser provides its own light, so mapping works with the lights off.
Can a robot vacuum camera be hacked? Any connected device carries some risk. Keep firmware updated, use a strong password with two-factor sign-in, and turn off remote viewing and photo uploads you do not need.
Do camera robots avoid pet mess? Many camera-based models are designed to recognise it, but none is guaranteed. Check the floor before a scheduled run if you have a puppy or an unwell pet, and see our best robot vacuum for pet hair guide.
