The Roomba Combo 10 Max is aimed at homes where carpet and hard floor sit side by side and a wet rug would be a real problem. Instead of raising its mop by a few millimetres, iRobot lifts the whole pad up onto the top of the robot when it reaches carpet. That Auto-Retract system, backed by what iRobot calls Dry Rug Intelligence, is the main reason to consider it, along with camera-based avoidance of cords, stairs and pet bowls.

In its favour
- Auto-Retract Mopping System lifts the pad to the top of the robot, so carpets stay dry, according to iRobot.
- Dual Rubber Brushes avoid pet hair tangles while strong suction pulls embedded dirt from carpet.
- AutoWash Dock empties debris, refills the tank, and washes and dries the pad.
Good to know
- The listing gives no suction figure in Pa, so raw power is hard to compare.
- Runtime is not stated in the listing, so coverage per charge is unclear.
Our take
How the pad and SmartScrub work
Mopping uses a flat pad. With SmartScrub switched on, the robot scrubs back and forth with consistent pressure, and iRobot claims this gives twice the scrubbing depth of its standard mode on coffee and grime. It is meant for pawprints in hallways, kitchen spills and bathroom tiles.
When carpet appears, the pad retracts to the top of the robot, so vacuuming carries on over rugs with no wet patches.
Vacuuming and avoidance
The 4-Stage Cleaning System combines an edge-sweeping brush, dual rubber brushes that resist pet hair tangles and suction aimed at embedded carpet dirt. No Pa figure is given, so it is hard to compare with rivals on raw power. Navigation relies on detection sensors and a camera rather than lidar, and the robot can recognise rooms and zones such as the area in front of the oven, while avoiding stairs, cords and pet bowls. iRobot says mapping is seven times faster than before.
The AutoWash dock
The dock empties debris into an enclosed bag, refills the mopping tank, washes and dries the pad, and runs its own self-cleaning cycle. You can also ask it to wash the pad after specific rooms, such as a bathroom, so dirt is not carried elsewhere. The listing does not state runtime, bag capacity or how many days the dock lasts between changes.
Against the newer Roombas
The Roomba Max 705 Combo replaces the pad with a heated, self-cleaning roller under a protective cover, adds hidden lidar and recognises pet waste. The Roomba 505 Combo also moves to lidar with an AutoWash dock. The Combo 10 Max stands out for its fully retracting pad and its room-aware camera navigation.
Verdict
The Combo 10 Max suits mixed homes where keeping carpets completely dry is the priority, and where lighter mopping of everyday marks is enough. If you deal with greasy kitchen floors or pet accidents, the Roomba Max 705 Combo is the better iRobot. If you want a stated suction figure for carpet, the Ecovacs T80S Omni publishes one.
