iRobot Roomba j7: camera avoidance without a base

The Roomba j7 is a vacuum-only robot for pet owners whose biggest worry is the robot running through an accident or chewing on a charging cable. iRobot's PrecisionVision Navigation uses a camera to spot pet waste and cords and steer around them in real time. There is no mop and no self-emptying base, which keeps it compact. It suits smaller homes where avoidance matters more than automation.

Our take
PrecisionVision in daily use
The camera-based system identifies hazards such as pet waste and charging cords as the robot moves and plans around them. For homes with a puppy or an older dog, that single feature can matter more than suction or dock features.
The robot also learns your home and routines, according to iRobot, and adapts its cleaning to fit around them.
Cleaning system
The 3-Stage Cleaning System includes what iRobot calls 10 times the power-lifting suction (the listing does not say what that is measured against), an edge-sweeping brush for walls and corners, and dual multi-surface rubber brushes. Those rubber brushes flex to suit different floors and resist tangling with pet hair. Dirt Detect finds the dirtiest areas and cleans them more thoroughly, and you can send the robot to a specific spot, such as in front of the kitchen counter.
Limits to plan around
Battery life is listed at only 75 minutes, which is short for larger homes and means more recharge stops. There is no self-emptying base, so the 400 ml bin needs emptying after runs, especially with a shedding pet. There is no mopping at all. The box includes the robot, a charger with cable, a side brush and an extra filter. Smart mapping, no-go zones and selective room cleaning are listed, along with Alexa support.
j7 against other Roombas
The Roomba 505 Combo keeps the same pet waste avoidance but adds lidar, mopping pads and an AutoWash dock that empties for 75 days. The Roomba Max 705 Combo adds a heated roller mop. The j7 is the simplest way to get iRobot's camera avoidance, with no dock to house.
Verdict
The Roomba j7 suits flats and small homes with pets, where avoiding accidents and cables is the top priority and you are happy to empty the bin yourself. If you want self-emptying and mopping as well, the Roomba 505 Combo keeps the same avoidance. If runtime matters for a larger home, look beyond the j7's 75 minutes.
