**In short:** Turn the Roomba over and look for the sticker on the underside, often under the bin or near the wheels: it shows the model number and the serial number. If the robot is connected, the Roomba app also shows the model in its settings. The first digit or letter tells you the series, which decides which bags, brushes and filters fit.

Knowing exactly which Roomba you have matters more than you might think. Brushes, filters, batteries and dock bags differ between series, and the same-looking robot can come in several versions. iRobot has also changed its naming over the years, from numbered series like the 600 and 900 to letters like i, j and s, and more recently names like Combo 10 Max and Max 705 Combo. This guide shows where to find the model and how to read it.

## Where to find the model number

The original box and the receipt also show the model, which is handy for warranty claims.

1. Switch the robot off and turn it over onto a soft surface.
2. Remove the bin if needed and look for a white or silver label on the underside.
3. Note the model number and the serial number; the serial often starts with the model code.
4. Check the dock too: Clean Base and AutoWash docks have their own label underneath or on the back.
5. If the label is worn, open the Roomba Home app or iRobot Home app, choose the robot and look in settings or product information.

## Reading the series

Older Roombas use a three-digit series number, such as 600, 800 or 900, with a specific model like 671 or 960. These navigate largely by sensors and, on the 900 series, a camera. Later models use letters: the i series (i3, i5, i7), the j series (j5, j7, j9) with front cameras for avoiding obstacles, and the s9 with a D-shaped body. A plus sign usually means it came with a self-emptying Clean Base.

Newer models carry names such as Roomba Combo 10 Max, Roomba Max 705 Combo, Roomba 505 Combo and Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo. Combo means it vacuums and mops. The model number on the label is still the most reliable way to identify it.

| Name pattern | Examples | What it tells you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Three-digit series | 671, 960, 980 | Older ranges; spares vary by series |
| Letter series | i3, i7, j7, s9 | Newer app-mapping models |
| Plus sign | j7+, i3+ | Supplied with a self-emptying base |
| Combo | Combo j5+, Combo 10 Max | Vacuums and mops |
| Newer names | Max 705 Combo, 505 Combo, 205 | Lidar models with AutoWash or compacting |

## Matching spares to your model

Once you know the series, buy spares listed for it. Brushes and filters for the i, j and Combo j models are often shared, but s9 parts are different because of its wider brushes. Clean Base bags also differ between dock generations, so check the dock model as well as the robot.

Batteries are series-specific; never force a battery that does not fit. Our guides to [replacing a robot vacuum battery](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-battery-replacement) and [when to replace brushes and filters](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-spares-schedule) help with timing.

Note: Only use batteries and chargers made for your Roomba series. Mismatched lithium batteries can overheat.

## Finding the manual and support

With the model number, you can download the manual and quick start guide from iRobot's UK support site. Support pages are listed by series, so search for i7 or j7 rather than the full serial. For error tones and lights, our [Roomba not working guide](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/roomba-not-working) lists the common fixes.

If you bought a Roomba online, check that it is a UK model with a UK plug. Some older Roomba listings sold in the UK are imported North American stock, which can affect warranty and charger compatibility. The newest models are listed in our [Roomba models compared](https://dockandmop.co.uk/best/irobot-roomba-models-compared).

## Is my Roomba too old to keep?

Older 600 and 800 series robots still clean well if the battery and brushes are in good condition, and spares remain widely available. What they lack is room mapping, no-go zones in the app and object avoidance.

If your robot needs a new battery, brushes and filter all at once, compare the cost with a current model. Our page on [how long robot vacuums last](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/how-long-do-robot-vacuums-last) can help you decide whether to repair or replace.
