**In short:** A roller mop is a long cylinder that is rinsed with clean water and scraped dry while it cleans, so it keeps mopping with a fresh surface and suits large hard floors. Twin rotating pads spin against the floor with steady pressure, can swing out to reach edges and are cheap to replace. Choose a roller for big kitchens and open-plan floors, rotating pads for corners, wood floors and lower running costs.

Robot mops have moved on from a damp cloth dragged behind the robot. The two main designs now are twin rotating pads, used by Roborock, Dreame and many Ecovacs and Eufy models, and roller mops, used by the Ecovacs T80 and T90 series, Eufy's Omni roller models and iRobot's Max 705 Combo. This page explains how each works, where each does better, and compares two roller robots with two rotating-pad robots from current Amazon UK listings.

## How a roller mop works

A roller mop is a cylinder of absorbent fabric running across the width of the robot. As it rolls, a small tank sprays clean water onto it and a scraper squeezes dirty water off into a separate chamber. The roller therefore keeps presenting a freshly rinsed surface to the floor instead of pushing the same dirty cloth around.

The Ecovacs T80S Omni lists an OZMO roller that cleans itself in real time and lifts up to 1.5 cm on carpet. The Eufy C28 Omni lists a 27 cm roller with 1 kg of downward pressure that self-cleans as it goes. The downside is mechanical complexity: more parts, a roller that must be dried properly and, on some models, more limited reach into corners.

## How twin rotating pads work

Twin rotating mops are two round pads that spin quickly against the floor, usually at around 180 to 200 RPM, while water drips onto them from the robot's tank. The spinning gives a scrubbing action on dried marks, and because each pad is round it can be pushed outwards on an arm to reach skirting boards and table legs.

The Roborock Qrevo 5AE lists 200 RPM rotating pads on a FlexiArm that extends for corners, 30 water levels and a 10 mm lift on carpet. The Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 lists DuoScrub pads that extend into corners and lift 10 mm. The pads pick up dirt as they go, so the dock washes them between rooms or at set intervals rather than continuously.

## Side by side: where each design wins

Neither design is better in every home. The table sums up the practical differences, based on how the two systems work rather than on any single model.

| Factor | Roller mop | Twin rotating pads |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dirty water spread | Low: rinsed while cleaning | Higher on big rooms between washes |
| Edge and corner reach | Good on models with an extending roller | Very good with an extending arm |
| Dried marks | Good with downward pressure | Good, spinning scrub action |
| Carpet handling | Lift plus cover on some models | Lift of around 10 mm, or detach |
| Spares | Replacement roller | Pairs of round pads, widely sold |
| Best for | Large tiled or vinyl floors | Wood, mixed rooms, corners |

## Wood, laminate and carpets

On sealed wood and laminate, the real risk is too much water standing in the joints. Both designs let you turn the flow down; rotating-pad robots like the Qrevo 5AE give fine control with 30 water levels. For rugs, check how far the mop lifts and whether it is covered or detached. A 10 mm lift suits low-pile rugs; for thicker rugs, use a no-mop zone or a robot that detaches its pads at the dock. See [robot vacuums on carpet and rugs](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuums-on-carpet-and-rugs).

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a roller mop better than spinning pads?** For large hard floors where dirty water spread matters, a roller mop has an edge. For corners, wood floors and cheaper spares, rotating pads remain a strong choice.

**Do roller mops smell?** Any mop can smell if left damp. Docks that dry the roller or pads with warm air after each run reduce this, and so does emptying the dirty-water tank promptly.

**Can I use detergent with either type?** Yes, but use the maker's own solution and dose. Third-party products can foam or harm the pump.

**How often do mop pads or rollers need replacing?** Makers usually suggest every few months, depending on use. Our [spares schedule](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-spares-schedule) gives typical intervals.
