**In short:** Weak suction is almost always a blockage. Empty the robot's bin, tap or replace the filter, clear hair from the main brush and the inlet behind it, and check the duct where the dock empties the bin. Then make sure the suction level in the app has not been set to quiet. A suction fan error that persists after cleaning points to a blocked or failing fan and needs the maker's support.

A robot vacuum that leaves crumbs behind, sounds different or throws a suction or fan error has almost always lost airflow somewhere between the brush and the fan. Because robots are small, it only takes a clump of hair or a clogged filter to choke them. This guide works through the checks in the order most likely to fix the problem, and explains what a suction fan error means on models such as the Eufy RoboVac.

## Start with the bin and filter

A full bin or a clogged filter is the most common cause. Even with a self-emptying dock, the bin can pack with hair or the dock may have stopped emptying it. Remove the bin, empty it and look at the filter: if it is grey and matted, tap it clean over a rubbish bin.

Only rinse filters described as washable in your manual, and let them dry for at least 24 hours before refitting. A damp filter clogs quickly and can harm the motor. Filters wear out, so replace them every few months; our [spares schedule](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-spares-schedule) gives typical intervals.

1. Switch the robot off.
2. Remove and empty the bin.
3. Tap the filter clean or fit a new one.
4. Check the bin seal is intact and seated.
5. Refit and test suction on a hard floor.

## Clear the brush and the inlet

Hair wrapped tightly around the main brush stops it agitating the floor and can block the opening behind it. Turn the robot over, release the brush guard, lift out the brush and cut away hair with scissors or the cutting tool supplied. Pull hair from the brush end caps, which is where it hides.

Then look into the inlet, the opening between the brush chamber and the bin. Large items such as hair ties, paper or cat litter can lodge there. Remove them carefully with your fingers or tweezers. Our [brush not spinning fixes](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-brush-not-spinning) go further if the brush is jammed.

## Check the dock port and air path

On self-emptying robots, the dock pulls dirt out through a port on the robot's bin and a duct in the base. If that duct blocks, the robot's bin stays full and suction drops. Check the evacuation port on the bin and the opening in the base for hair or debris, and clear it. See [dock not emptying](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-dock-not-emptying).

Also check the exhaust vents on the robot for fluff. Blocked exhausts restrict airflow just as much as a blocked inlet.

## Settings that look like weak suction

Robots often run on a quiet or eco suction level by default, and some apps lower suction automatically at night under Do Not Disturb settings. Check the suction level for each room in the app. Turn on carpet boost if your robot has it, so it raises suction on rugs.

On combo robots, a mopping-only mode or a vacuum-and-mop setting may use lower suction to avoid spraying water. Our explainer on [suction in Pa](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-suction-pa-explained) explains how these levels relate to the figures in listings.

| Check | What to look for |
| --- | --- |
| Bin | Full or packed with hair |
| Filter | Grey, matted or damp |
| Main brush | Hair wrap, worn bristles |
| Inlet | Hair ties, paper, litter |
| Dock port | Hair blocking the flap |
| App setting | Quiet mode or no carpet boost |

## Suction fan errors

A suction fan or motor error, which Eufy RoboVac owners sometimes see, usually means the fan cannot spin freely or is drawing too much current. Follow every check above, then restart the robot. If the error returns straight away, or the robot makes a grinding or high-pitched noise, stop using it.

Fan motors are not usually user-serviceable. Contact the maker's support, especially if the robot is under warranty. Our [Eufy troubleshooting guide](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/eufy-robovac-troubleshooting) and [loud noise fixes](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-loud-noise) may help you describe the fault.

Note: Do not open the sealed motor housing. Switch the robot off before checking the brush, inlet or fan area.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is my robot vacuum not picking up dirt?** Most often a full bin, clogged filter or hair-wrapped brush. Work through the checks above in order.

**Does a robot vacuum lose suction as it ages?** Filters and brushes wear, which reduces pick-up. Replacing them usually restores performance.

**Can a weak battery reduce suction?** A worn battery mainly shortens runtime, but some robots lower power as the charge drops. See [battery replacement](https://dockandmop.co.uk/blog/robot-vacuum-battery-replacement).

**How do I stop it happening again?** Empty the bin or check the dock weekly, cut hair from the brush every week or two and replace the filter on schedule.
